Reiki levels explained: Level 1, 2, 3 and Reiki Master
Usui Reiki is taught in stages, each one opened by an attunement from a Reiki Master. Here is what each level covers, and what it means when a practitioner calls themselves a Reiki Master.
Where the levels come from
Reiki was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui (臼井甕男) in the early 1920s. His system was carried to the West through Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata, and most Reiki taught today keeps Usui’s three-stage structure, though schools name and split the levels slightly differently.
Level 1: Shoden (初伝), “first teaching”
Level 1 is about self-practice. Students receive their first attunements, learn the Reiki principles (just for today, do not anger, do not worry, be grateful, work diligently, be kind to others), and practise daily self-Reiki for relaxation. Many people stop here, simply using Reiki for themselves and their family.
Level 2: Okuden (奥伝), “inner teaching”
Level 2 introduces three traditional symbols and, most importantly, distance Reiki: sending Reiki to a person or a space without being in the same room. This is the level at which practitioners usually begin to offer sessions to others.
Level 3 and Master: Shinpiden (神秘伝), “mystery teaching”
The master level deepens personal practice and adds the master symbol. Some schools split it into Level 3 (Master practitioner) and Master Teacher; others teach it as one. A Reiki Master has completed this level and can attune and teach students.
Tan Yan Tong (陳衍通) is certified through Levels 1, 2 and 3 and the Master level, and offers Reiki with no physical contact.
How to choose a Reiki practitioner
- Ask which levels they hold and who trained them.
- Ask how sessions work, including whether there is any touch.
- Expect clear language: Reiki supports relaxation and does not replace medical care.
- Avoid anyone who promises cures or uses fear to sell.
