What is feng shui?

Feng shui (风水, “wind and water”, sometimes written fengshui) is the Chinese practice of arranging where and how we live so that people and place sit well together. It has two broad branches: the Form School (峦头), which reads landforms, roads, light and the shape of rooms, and the Compass School (理气), which works with directions and time. Eight Mansions (八宅) and Flying Stars (玄空飞星) are the best-known compass methods.

Your Kua number and the Eight Mansions

Eight Mansions gives each person a Kua number (命卦) from their birth year and gender. Kua numbers fall into two groups:

Each person has four favourable directions, Sheng Qi (生气, growth), Tian Yi (天医, health), Yan Nian (延年, relationships) and Fu Wei (伏位, stability), and four to avoid. The calculator works out your Kua, using Li Chun (about 4 February) as the start of the year, and shows all eight directions for your desk, bed and door.

Home Harmony: one score for the whole household

Real homes are shared. Home Harmony takes everyone who will live in a home, for example husband, wife, son and daughter, and the direction the main door faces. Parents carry the most weight in the score; for children the focus is on study, so their desk direction matters most. You get:

Home Harmony is open to everyone, including property agents who want to show buyers how a unit suits their family.

Simple feng shui habits that help any home

Keeping feng shui in perspective

Feng shui is a cultural design tradition. There is no scientific evidence that directions change fortune, but many of its habits, such as light, air, order and a calm bedroom, make a home more pleasant to live in. Use it alongside, never instead of, proper property checks.

Common questions

How do I calculate my Kua number?

Add the digits of your birth year until one digit is left (1985 → 1+9+8+5 = 23 → 5). Men: 11 minus that number; women: 4 plus that number, reduced to one digit again. A result of 5 becomes 2 for men and 8 for women. If you were born before about 4 February, use the previous year. The calculator does this for you.

Which way does my HDB flat or condo face?

Stand at your main door, looking out, and read a phone compass held flat, away from metal gates. The direction you are looking is the facing direction.

What if my family is in different Kua groups?

That is common. Home Harmony shows which way each person’s bed and desk should face, so each person still uses their own good directions.

Can property agents use Home Harmony?

Yes. It is open to the public, and you can compare up to three units for the same household.

Do you offer feng shui home visits?

No. Feng shui on Mingli Atlas is offered as free online tools, such as the Kua calculator and Home Harmony. Home visits in Singapore, now in beta, cover radiesthesia and no-touch Reiki only.
