Radiesthesia

What is radiesthesia? Pendulum dowsing explained

Radiesthesia is the practice of sensing the subtle quality of a place or object, usually with the help of a pendulum. Here is where it comes from, how it is used in homes, and what to expect.

Where the word comes from

Dowsing is ancient, best known from the search for underground water with a forked stick. The word radiesthesia was coined in the 1930s by the French priest Abbé Alexis Bouly, from the Latin radius and the Greek aisthēsis, “sensing of radiation”. Another French priest, Abbé Alexis Mermet, popularised the pendulum method in his writing of the same period.

How a pendulum is used

A pendulum is simply a small weight on a cord or chain. The practitioner holds it still, asks a clear question or focuses on a spot, and observes the pendulum’s movement as an aid to their own sensing. With practice, the movements are read as a simple language: one direction for “yes” or harmonious, another for “no” or disturbed.

Radiesthesia in the home

In a home assessment, the practitioner moves through each room and corner and notes the areas that feel heavy, stagnant or unsettled, such as a bedroom where people sleep poorly or a corner nobody uses. They then suggest harmonizing adjustments: geometric shapes and proportions, the placement of furniture and objects, and simple changes to layout and flow. Each session takes 1–2 hours, and the written report is sent separately afterwards.

What tests have found

Dowsing has been studied under controlled conditions, including large experiments in Germany in the late 1980s, and dowsers have generally not performed better than chance. We think it is right to say so. We offer radiesthesia as a reflective, calming practice for the home, alongside feng shui, not as a scientific measurement or a health service.

Common questions

Is radiesthesia the same as dowsing?

Yes. Radiesthesia is the French-origin name for dowsing, especially pendulum dowsing used to assess places and objects.

Can radiesthesia detect illness?

No. Our radiesthesia work is for the feel and harmony of a home. It does not diagnose, treat or cure any condition.
