Dividend income for retirement: how much do you need?
Many Singaporeans plan to live on CPF LIFE plus dividends. The maths is simple; the discipline is in the assumptions.
The one formula
Capital needed = yearly income ÷ yield. S$24,000 a year at 5% needs S$480,000; at 4% it needs S$600,000. A small change in the yield you assume changes the capital a lot.
Fill the gap, not the whole budget
Let CPF LIFE cover the base. Ask dividends to cover only the gap between CPF LIFE and the life you want. That keeps the capital target realistic.
Plan for cuts
- Use a cautious, blended yield across the whole portfolio.
- Spread across companies, REITs and sectors; no single holding should break your plan.
- Keep one to two years of spending in cash so you never have to sell in a downturn.

Common questions
Is this investment advice?
No. This article explains the arithmetic of income planning. It does not recommend any share, REIT or fund.
Should I reinvest dividends before retiring?
Reinvesting while you are working grows the portfolio faster. Many people switch to taking dividends as income once they retire.
