Every system here starts from one idea: things exist as complementary pairs that turn into each other. Yang is active, outward, bright and hot; Yin is receptive, inward, dark and cool. Noon is the peak of Yang and already holds the seed of Yin; midnight is the reverse. In charts, every stem and branch is either Yang or Yin, and that polarity decides details such as which Ten God a stem becomes and whether luck pillars run forward or backward.

Wu Xing is better translated as "five phases": Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water describe stages of change, not substances. Two cycles drive every reading. In the generating cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal collects Water (condensation), and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle, Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.

五行更贴切的理解是“五种变化阶段”。木、火、土、金、水描述的是气的状态，而非物质本身。论命离不开两个循环：相生——木生火、火生土、土生金、金生水、水生木；相克——木克土、土克水、水克火、火克金、金克木。

The ten Heavenly Stems are the five elements in Yang and Yin form. The twelve Earthly Branches are the twelve months and the twelve two-hour periods of the day, each with an animal. Branches also contain "hidden stems", the elements stored inside them. Together they make the alphabet of every chart.

十天干是五行的阴阳两种形态；十二地支对应十二个月与一天的十二个时辰，各配一生肖。地支内藏“人元”，即藏干。干支合起来就是命盘的字母表。

Pair stems and branches in step (Yang with Yang, Yin with Yin) and the combinations repeat after 60, the lowest common multiple of 10 and 12. This cycle has counted days without a break for well over two thousand years, and it also labels years, months and hours. Each pair carries a "Na Yin" sound-element, shown under it.

天干与地支依次相配（阳配阳、阴配阴），六十为一周，即10与12的最小公倍数。这一干支纪日两千多年来从未中断，同样用来纪年、纪月、纪时。每组干支另有“纳音”五行，标于其下。

BaZi months are not calendar months. They follow the sun: every 15° of the sun's path along the ecliptic marks a solar term. The twelve "Jie" terms (立春 at 315°, 惊蛰 at 345° and so on) start each BaZi month, and the year changes at 立春, Start of Spring, around 4 February, not at Chinese New Year. This is why a calculator needs astronomy: a baby born on 3 February may belong to the previous year's Ox, even if Chinese New Year has passed.

八字的月份不是公历月，而是跟随太阳。太阳在黄道上每走15°为一个节气。十二个“节”（立春315°、惊蛰345°……）是每个八字月的起点；年柱以立春（约2月4日）为界，而非春节。所以排盘需要天文计算：2月3日出生的人，即使已过春节，仍可能属上一年。

Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar of one stem over one branch: eight characters in total, hence "BaZi". The day stem is the Day Master, the symbol of you. Every other character is read by its relationship to the Day Master, producing the Ten Gods. The method took shape in the Tang and Song dynasties; Xu Ziping (徐子平) made the day stem central, which is why BaZi is also called Zi Ping.

出生的年、月、日、时各成一柱，每柱一干一支，共八个字，故称“八字”。日干称为“日主”，代表命主本人；其余各字依与日主的生克关系定为“十神”。此法成形于唐宋，宋代徐子平以日干为主，故又称“子平术”。

How a reading is built论命步骤

1. Find the Day Master and judge its strength: is it in season (month branch), rooted in the branches, supported by stems?
2. Identify the useful element (用神) that balances the chart.
3. Read the Ten Gods for themes: wealth, career, relationships, learning.
4. Lay the ten-year Luck Pillars and annual pillars over the natal chart to see timing.

Zi Wei uses the lunar calendar (lunar month, lunar day, birth hour, year stem) to place over a hundred stars into twelve palaces. Tradition credits the Song-dynasty Daoist Chen Tuan (陈抟). The Zi Wei star, named after the pole star region, leads one group of major stars; Tian Fu leads the other. The Life Palace (命宫) is fixed by counting month forward and hour backward from 寅; the "Five Element Bureau" from the Life Palace's Na Yin decides where Zi Wei lands and when the ten-year periods begin.

紫微斗数以农历的月、日、出生时辰与年干安星，将百余颗星曜布入十二宫。相传源自宋代道士陈抟。紫微星以北极天区为名，领紫微星系；天府领天府星系。命宫由寅宫起正月顺数至生月、再逆数至生时而定；以命宫纳音定“五行局”，决定紫微落宫及大限起岁。

Feng Shui has two branches. Form School (峦头) reads physical surroundings: mountains, water, roads, the shape of a room. Compass School (理气) uses the luopan and time-based formulas such as Flying Stars (玄空飞星) and Eight Mansions (八宅). Eight Mansions is the simplest personal method: your birth year and gender give a Kua number, one of the eight trigrams, which places you in the East or West group with four favourable and four unfavourable directions.

风水分两大派：峦头派看形势，如山水、道路与屋形；理气派用罗盘与时间公式，如玄空飞星、八宅。八宅最易上手：以出生年与性别求得命卦（八卦之一），分东四命或西四命，各有四吉四凶方位。

The Five Grids method was systematised by Kumasaki Kenō (熊崎健翁) in 1920s Japan and became popular in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. It counts strokes of each character in its traditional Kangxi Dictionary form, where radicals keep their full form: 氵 counts as 水 (4), 扌 as 手 (4), 艹 as 艸 (6), 辶 as 7. From these counts it builds five numbers. Each number's last digit gives an element (1–2 Wood, 3–4 Fire, 5–6 Earth, 7–8 Metal, 9–0 Water), and each is rated using a traditional list of 81 numbers.

五格剖象法由日本熊崎健翁于1920年代整理，流行于台湾及东南亚。笔画以《康熙字典》繁体计，部首还原本字：氵作水4画、扌作手4画、艹作艸6画、辶作7画。由此得出五个数，尾数定五行（1、2木，3、4火，5、6土，7、8金，9、0水），再依八十一数理定吉凶。

The Heaven–Person–Earth elements form the "Three Talents" (三才). Generating relationships (e.g. Wood → Fire → Earth) are considered smooth; controlling ones signal tension. Many Chinese practitioners also choose characters whose radicals carry the useful element from the BaZi chart.

天格、人格、地格的五行组成“三才”。相生（如木→火→土）为顺，相克为逆。不少命理师还会依八字喜用神选用带相应五行部首的字。
